— UW-Stevens Point’s women’s basketball program continues to dominate the WIAC.

The Pointers won their fourth straight conference tournament title here Sunday with a 73-53 victory over UW-Whitewater.

With the win, Stevens Point (25-2) earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Whitewater (21-6) is expected to receive an at-large bid when pairings are announced this afternoon.

In notching its 18th straight game, Stevens Point pulled away with the help of a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds from junior Ashley Averkamp.

The Warhawks trailed by nine at half, but cut the deficit to four on Dana Thompson’s basket with 15:30 left to play. The Pointers responded with a 9-3 run to take control.

Stevens Point led by nine at the half, then outscored the Warhawks by 11 in the second half. Whitewater had the margin down to four points early in the second half, but Cassie Bandow hit two straight baskets to extend the Pointers’ lead, and they led by double digits for the remainder of the game.

The Warhawks shot a season-low 24.5 percent on field goals, misfiring on 40 of 53 shots. Whitewater was only

1-for-12 on three-pointers and committed 20 turnovers.

Thompson led the Warhawks with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cortney Kumerow added 10 points for Whitewater.

Stevens Point, which became only the sixth team to go unbeaten (16-0) in WIAC play, also defeated Whitewater in last year’s conference tournament title game.
