Craig, Parker gymnasts send individuals to state

JANESVILLE — Becky Schneider and the Janesville Craig gymnastics team had a record-setting performance Saturday.

The Cougars broke the school scoring record and finished fourth overall in the talented WIAA Division 1 sectional at Craig. Schneider broke her own school record in winning the all-around and also was the floor exercise champion.

The co-op team of Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall won the team title with 146.05, while the co-op team of Burlington/Badger/Catholic Central/Wilmot was second with 144.425.

Craig High, the Big Eight Conference meet champion, was fourth with 141.55. Big Eight dual meet champion Janesville Parker was sixth with 137.025.

The top two teams qualify for next weekend’s state meet at Wisconsin Rapids, as do the top five individual events and the top six in all-around.

Schneider, a junior and the defending state champion in the all-around, will be joined at state by teammates Sara Ennocenti and Ashley Pohlman on vault. Ennocenti, the defending state champion on vault, won Saturday’s sectional with a 9.45. Schneider and Pohlman tied for third with a 9.35.

“I couldn’t have asked for anymore from my team,” Craig coach Jean Welch said. “This was really a mini state meet with caliber of teams that were here, so for us to set a school record as a team, that tells you how well we performed.

“Becky was on fire. She nailed every routine she had. And Sara had another great vault to win that even, while Ashley came up with a clutch vault to also make it through to state.”

Schneider finished with a score of 37.75 to win the all around and had a 9.475 on floor exercise to edge Janesville Parker’s Erika Whitson (9.425) for first.

“Erika will be making her fourth straight trip to state,” Parker coach Cathy Lehmann said. “That’s a pretty special accomplishment.”
