— Tuesday night’s Big Eight Conference game matching Janesville Parker and Madison Memorial girls basketball teams resembled a season opener more than a game in the final weeks of the regular season.

Parker High overcame a

10-day layoff and defeated the host Spartans, 64-42, in a game rescheduled from Saturday.

Ashley Hartwig scored 19 points, and Danielle Flood added 17 as the Vikings controlled a Memorial team that had not practiced for about a week due to the school postponments in Madison.

“They were a little rough,” Parker coach Tom Klawitter said.

The Vikings (13-5, 10-5) built a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and led 30-16 at halftime.

Parker took control in the third quarter, outscoring Memorial 21-7 to take a 50-23 lead.

Klawitter credited the Vikings’ defense for getting things going.

“Good defense set the tempo,” Klawitter said. “Once we buckled down on defense, our offense was a lot better.”

The game had 45 fouls with the Spartans (0-17,

0-15) committing 27. The Vikings made 23 of 43 free throws.

“There was not a lot of continuity to it,” Klawitter said. “We hadn’t played in 10 days.”

The Vikings will be at Middleton on Friday night to face the state’s top-ranked Division 1 team.
