Janesville teams host regional openers
Janesville Parker’s best season since 2002 and Janesville Craig’s strong finish this season have paid off for WIAA boys basketball tournament competition.
Both earned home games for regional openers in sectional seeding that was finalized over the weekend, but both also will be among the few Division 1 teams that have to play Tuesday, March 1, on opening night.
Parker High, 6-11 in the Big Eight and 8-13 overall, received a No. 7 seed in the Kenosha Tremper Sectional and will host 10th-seeded Tremper (4-16) on opening night. Craig (4-13, 6-15), the No. 8 seed, hosts ninth-seeded Lake Geneva Badger (3-17) that night.
Craig is in the sectional’s upper bracket and would play at top-seeded Burlington (19-2) in the Saturday, March 5, regional finals. Parker is in the lower bracket and would be at second-seeded Beloit Memorial (17-4) in the regional finals.
The Tremper Sectional matches up with the Racine Horlick Sectional to form a super sectional in the WIAA’s new five-division tournament format. The playoff between those sectional champions to determine one of only four Division 1 state qualifiers is Tuesday, March 15, at Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee.
UW-Whitewater also will host a Division 1 super sectional, matching the Sun Prairie and West Allis Central sectional champions.
Madison Memorial (15-5), last year’s Division 1 state runner-up and a state qualifier the last seven years in the old eight-team format, is the No. 1 seed in the Sun Prairie Sectional. Sun Prairie (16-5) is No. 2.
Milwaukee Riverside (17-2) is the No. 1 seed, and Milwaukee King (17-2) is No. 2 in the West Allis Central Sectional. They are third and fifth, respectively, in the AP state ratings.
Waunakee (19-1), the state’s top-ranked Division 1 team, is a No. 1 upper-bracket seed for Saturday, March 10, sectional final at Janesville Craig. Monroe (18-3) is the No. 2 seed for the upper bracket. Oregon
(14-6) and Waterford (12-7) are No. 1 regional seeds for the lower bracket.
Fourth-ranked East Troy (19-1) is the No. 2 seed behind Whitefish Bay Dominican (18-3) in the lower bracket of a Division 3 sectional that will finish Saturday, March 12, at the McGuire Center. Second-ranked Racine St. Catherine’s (16-3) is the No. 3 seed in the lower bracket of that sectional.
Other area schools in Division 3 pair into the Middleton Sectional. Lakeside Lutheran (19-1) and Clinton (17-3), which just won the Rock Valley South championship, are No. 1 regional seeds in the lower bracket of the sectional.
Sectional finals will determine the four state qualifiers for each division in Divisions
