Minnesota beats Wisconsin 5-2
MADISON Taylor Matson scored two goals as Minnesota beat Wisconsin 5-2 Friday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The win by the Golden Gophers snapped the Badgers' nine-game home winning streak.
Minnesota (13-12-4, 10-10-3) took charge in the second period, scoring three times to go up 4-1.
Matson, whose 14-game scoreless streak was snapped last weekend, had two of the Gophers' three goals in the second period.
Mike Hoeffel scored to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead, but Wisconsin tied it on Jake Gardiner's power-play goal just 32 seconds into the second period. Just 1:10 later, Jacob Cepis broke the tie. Gardiner and Jordy Murray had goals for the Badgers.
Wisconsin's power play is fourth in the nation, but it was just 2-for-10 with a man advantage against the Gophers. Minnesota was 3-for-6 on the power play.
"Both of our special teams were good," Minnesota senior forward Jacob Cepis said. "We were disciplined with (the penalty kill) and made them take some shots they didn't really want to take."
Cepis and Hoeffel had a goal and an assist and Aaron Ness assisted on two goals.
Gardiner had a goal and assist and Justin Schultz two assists for the Badgers.
Wisconsin (19-11-3, 11-10-2) has lost three straight games. It is 13-4 in its last 17 games.
