Fort's Evan Hill captures state swim title

— Evan Hill was good as gold Friday night.

The Fort Atkinson High School senior won the 50-yard freestyle at the WIAADivision 2 State Swimming and Diving Meet at the UW-Natatorium to highlightlocal competitors.


McFarland won its sixth straight team title with 286 points, and led a sweepof the top four spots by the Badger Conference. Monona Grove was second with279, Madison Edgewood third at 202 and Fort Atkinson fourth with 132.


Hill finished with a time of 21.48 to easily win the 50 freestyle, and addeda third-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.21. McFarland’sRyan O’Donnell won the event with a Division 2 record-time of 49.52,breaking his own mark of 49.74 set in 2010.


O’Donnell’s record was one of three set by the Spartans. The 200 medleyrelay team set a record with a winning time of 1:36.22, and O’Donnell addedanother record by winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:49.01.


O’Donnell’s time broke the mark of 1:50.80 set by former Olympian NeilWalker of Verona in 1994.


Fort Atkinson’s Tyler Zaspel, Avery Kan, Lee Hollman and Hill finishedsecond in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:27.38, and the 400 freestylerelay team of Zaspel, Hollman, Paul Hill and Evan Hill was fourth in 3:19.6.


Monona Grove won 200 freestyle relay in 1:25.81, with Elkhorn’s team of ZacSimon, Luke Gorst, Sam Johnson and Sean Collins finishing seventh in1:31.16.
