Going to the WIAA state swim meet always is special for high school boys or girls.

This time, however, Janesville Parker coach Eric Rhodes aims to make the trip extra special for his boys when the Vikings compete Saturday in the 200-yard medley relay relay at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison.

Division 1 swim events begin at 3 p.m., and Parker will be in the first heat of the medley relay with a team of junior Brandon Jackson, senior Nate Sigmund, sophomore Tommy Dvorak and senior Matt Simon, who combined for a school-record 1:43.06 time in last weekend’s Middleton Sectional.

Rhodes said that team is pushing for even better results this time.

“They got the school record by .01 seconds,” he said. “They are happy, but they want to really beat it.”

Rhodes said Parker’s approach has changed.

“We’re going for all the marbles. Let’s see if we can get 1:40,” Rhodes said. “You just never know. Some teams are just happy to be there, and they think ‘we made, and let’s have fun.’ That’s the kind of approach I had.

“But now we’ve made it, and let’s see how much we can improve,” Rhodes said. “Let’s focus how much we can break our own school record.’’
