Milton tips MG in overtime, other scores

Milton High did a favor for Monroe in Badger South boys basketball Tuesday night, but the Red Hawks had to work overtime.


The host Red Hawks knocked off Monona Grove, 56-51, in OT, to keep the Silver Eagles from breathing down the neck of first-place Monroe.


While the Cheesemakers (17-3) won a nonconference game and remained at 8-2 in the Badger South, Monona Grove fell to 6-3 in the league.


Milton (8-11, 3-8) made seven of 10 free throws in the overtime to notch the victory over the Silver Eagles.


The Red Hawks gained a


9-4 edge in the OT. Milton’s Sam McCann sank a layup as time expired to put the game into overtime.


McCann finished with 13 points and was the only Red Hawk in double figures. Max Gehrmann, Zach Zweifel and Drew Bauer each scored 13 points for Monona Grove


(13-5).

Spencer Brink added 12 points as the Crusaders (14-6, 7-4) snapped a two-game conference losing streak. Fort Atkinson’s Logan Schwandt led all scorers with 15 points.

-- Oregon 53, Stoughton 48—Oregon (14-5, 6-3) made 14 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Vikings (7-12, 3-7) in a Badger South game at Stoughton.


Evan Ackers went 10-for-10 at the line for the Panthers, all in the fourth quarter, to help Oregon gain a 21-20 edge over the last eight minutes.


Ackers finished with 17 points, and teammate David Solberg scored 14. Ben Cleveland, the son of former Madison East coach Rich Cleveland, had a game-high 19 points for Stoughton.

Monroe (17-3) trailed 31-28 after three quarters. Barrett finished with 21 points, while Armstrong scored six points. Alex Barenklau added 10 points for Monroe, the state’s eighth-ranked Division 2 team.


Eric Stewart and Brandon Staffeil scored 13 points apiece for DeForest (10-9).
