United Arts Alliance honors Janesville's talent

— United Arts Alliance announced the winners of the first Janesville Area Creativity Awards at a ceremony Friday night at the Janesville Performing Arts Center.

The ceremony was held during the art alliance's annual Arts Fest, an event that showcased local artists, musicians and singers.


Some of the winners were decided by a panel of judges.


Others were decided by "voting" at the ceremony. "Votes" were $1 and ballot-box stuffing was encouraged. The event was a fundraiser for the arts alliance scholarship fund.


Winners of the judged awards are:


-- Achievement by a Janesville native: Caleb Burhans.


-- Emerging star: Lexi Ganong.


-- Advertisement: Hedberg Public Library.


-- Media personality: Rose Stricker.


-- Theater makeup/hair: Stacy Abrahamson.


-- Theater costume: Cheryl Schneider for "Camelot."


-- Hair designer: Melinda Lanthrop.


-- Fine artist: Sam Ryan.


-- Arts educator: Barbara Mathews.


-- Music educator: Laura Schuler.


Winners of people's choice awards determined by $1 voting are:


-- Body artist: Holly Chase.


-- Culinary art: Best Events.


-- Dance group: Craig Spotlighters Show Choir.


-- Live music venue: Java Joys.


-- Theater production: "Fiddler on the Roof" by Theater Unlimited.


-- Busker: Jack Sibilski.


-- One Minute Film: "Blogger Support Center" by Jim Lyke and Robert Jazen.


-- CD/Song: Mitch Kopnik.


-- Live Band: Sapphire String Quartet.


-- Solo Performer: Chris Kohn.
