Monroe gets past Milton, other scores

Monroe High School’s boys basketball team hit last peak to top Milton in an up-and-down Badger South makeup game Monday night.


The first-place Cheesemakers finally put away the visiting Red Hawks, 50-32, by making 16 of 17 free throws in a 25-10 fourth quarter.


Monroe got off the 17-11 lead in the first quarter, but Riley Kovars’ six points sparked Milton to an 11-2 advantage in the second period and a 22-19 halftime lead. The Cheesemakers then turned the tables with a


6-0 shutout of the Red Hawks in the third quarter and pulled away in the final period after Milton was forced to foul.


The win lifted Monroe to 16-3 for the season and 8-2 in the conference, keeping the Cheesemakers ahead of second-place Monona Grove


(6-2). Milton fell to 2-8 in the Badger South and 7-11 overall.


Bryan Tordoff had 20 points, including three three-point goals, to lead Monroe, which moved back into the AP Division 2 state ratings this week at No. 8. Michael Barrett scored 15 points for the Cheesemakers, including seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter.


Kovars led Milton with 10 points, including eight in the first half.

Tanner Plomb scored 17 of his game-high 30 points in the first half as East Troy rolled to a 42-19 halftime lead.


Nate Dodge scored 16 points and Brett Prahl chipped in 13 for the Trojans.

The Dodgers gained a 12-5 advantage in the third quarter to take a 33-29 lead into the final period.
