— Alex Loftus shattered the oldest boys swimming record at Janesville Craig High School at the Division 1 Middleton Sectional on Saturday.

Lofus, a senior, won the 100 breaststroke in 59.23 seconds to smash Jai Khanna’s 1:00.06 mark set 25 years ago in 1986 and qualify for the WIAA Division 1 state meet this Saturday at the UW Natatorium.

Craig coach Brian Kitzman said breaking the long-standing breaststroke mark was the top priority for Loftus.

“It was a long time to wait,” Kitzman said. “Alex put together some incredible swims.’’

Loftus defeated Madison Memorial’s Patrick Franken en route to setting the school mark. Franken topped Loftus for the Big Eight Conference breaststroke championship last week.

“Peter is (Alex’s) main rival in the event,” Kitzman said.

“Peter has beat Alex two or three times, and beating him was just real sweet for Alex.’’

Loftus broke his school record in the 200 individual medley, posting a 1:58.33 to finish second to Franken, who won in 1:58.29. Loftus has a good chance of earning a state berth as an extra qualifier in the event.

Madison Memorial won the sectional title with 416 points. Madison West finished second with 334 points. Craig was fifth with 169 points and Janesville Parker finished sixth in the 11-team meet with 132 points.

Craig’s 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams each finished fifth and have good chances to make state as extra qualifiers.

Parker High School’s 200 medley relay team set a school record of 1:43.06 to finish sixth and could make state as an extra qualifier. Brandon Jackson, Nate Sigmund, Tommy Dvorak and Matt Simon combined for the school record.

Dvorak was Parker’s top individual, finishing ninth in the 100 butterfly in 56.05 seconds. Ben Anderson of Madison Memorial won the event in 52.19.
