Furseth starts tournament road winning title

STOUGHTON Siven Furseth knows his unbeaten record will only stay that way if he continues to stay in the moment.
The Janesville Craig High School senior did just that here Saturday as he continued his dominance by winning the 135-pound championship in the Stoughton Regional at the first level of WIAA Division 1 wrestling tournament competion.
Stoughton, however, captured the team title and advanced to Tuesday’s sectional dual against Kenosha Tremper at Beloit Memorial. The Vikings rolled up 239 points to top second-place Craig’s 195.
Meanwhile, the top four in each weight class advanced to next Saturday’s individual sectional at Craig.
Craig qualified 10 individuals for the sectional. Janesville Parker, which finished sixth with 109.5 points, advanced six.
Furseth, last year’s state champion at 130, pinned Parker sophomore Matt Pakes in the semifinals and Stoughton junior Kadri Heta in the finals to continue his perfect season. After going 40-0 last season, he heads into this year’s sectional with a 38-0 record, where he looks to stay on course and win his second consecutive state title.
“You can’t let up any matches, because when you let up, you get your biggest chance to get beat,” Furseth said.
Furseth thinks he is peaking at the right time.
“The whole year, I just keep working hard and keep trying to get better all I can,” he said.
Craig coach Mark Mullen talks fondly of his senior leader.
“I can’t say enough about Siven Furseth. He’s as good as they come, as good as advertised, does everything so well, makes us as proud as we can be.”
Craig senior Chris Pierce (36-3) also won a regional title. He trailed Parker junior Brennan Casey-Schmidt (36-6) by one point in the 130-pound finals, as time wound down. In the final seconds, Pierce executed a reversal to win 7-6.
“I was pretty happy, just had the heart to come back and get the reversal and win it,” Pierce said. “I beat him last week for conference and knew I had to go out there and beat him again.”
Pierce looked up at the clock with about 20 seconds left and knew he had to come up with something big to secure a comeback win.
“I just did a short set and reverse to him,” he said.
Senior Jamie Kumlien was the third Cougar to take home a regional championship. He did it by also improving 36-3 with a 15-0 technical fall over Stoughton sophomore Devon McCune at 119 pounds.
“Overall, our senior leadership came through for us, and in a few weight classes, we weren’t quite as tough as we needed to be,” said Mullen.
“We had chances to really do something great and ended up not maybe having enough toughness and heart as some of the other kids. We’re going to keep learning and keep trying to get better.”
However, along with their regional champions, the Cougars advanced senior Kyle Upmann (35-4) as a second place finisher at 125. They also advanced freshman Anthony Skrede (23-7) at 103, junior Ryan Ruble (11-11) at 112, freshman Zach Mulrooney (28-12) at 145 and sophomore Dakota Pearson (16-22) at 285 as third-place finishers.
Jacob Wilson (10-6), a freshman at 140, and Zak Kurtz (16-18), a junior at 171, reached the sectional for the Craig as fourth-place finishers.
Along with Casey-Schmidt, Parker had senior Cody Colson (28-8) advancing as the regional runner-up at 285. Colson was pinned by Stoughton sophomore Jessie Nelson 7:53 of overtime in the title match, but earned the runner-up spot over Pearson without a wrestleback.
Parker also advanced senior Adam Cavey (32-10), a third-place finisher at 125; senior Yoiser Mauleon (19-15), third at 160; sophomore Mitchel Henneman (2-2), fourth at 112; and Pakes (10-16) at 135.
As for the team champion, Mullen was impressed with how the host Vikings performed.
“The Stoughton guys really showed a lot of heart,” he said. “Our hats are off to them. They did what they needed to do.”
The Vikings rode wins from sophomore Kyle Moore, junior Nick Urso, senior Jack Williford and sophomore Jessie Nelson to cruise to the team title.
Stoughton coach Bob Empey was pleased with how his team responded.
“The biggest thing is that we came and united as a team to advance to the team sectional,” he said. “I think our kids competed well. The opportunities were in front of us, and we took advantage of that today.”
Empey is optimistic as he looks ahead to the sectional dual.
“The opportunity to represent Stoughton there is an honor,” he said. “We talk about writing a chapter in the history book here. We like what we did today. We like the chapter we have, but we’re not done yet.”
Wilmot Regional
Milton High junior John Wells kept alive his hopes of repeating as a WIAA state champion with his 112-pound title Saturday in the Division 1 regional wrestling tournament at Wilmot.
Wells, the 103 state champion last year, defeated Kenosha Tremper’s Tyler Rice, 4-3, in regional title match to improve his record to 37-7.
Tremper (185.5 points) edged Milton (182.5) for the team title, advancing the Trojans to Tuesday’s dual against Stoughton in the Beloit Memorial Team Sectional. The winner advances to the team state tournament.
“My hat’s off to Tremper. They got it done,” said Milton coach Pat Yauch. “It came down to head-to-head wrestlebacks, and they took two out of three.”
Milton’s Ian Johnson, runner-up at state at 160 last year, won the 171 title Saturday with a 7-3 victory over Wilmot’s James Huey. Johnson improved to 30-4.
Wells and Johnson will be joined at the sectional by teammates Landon Shea at 119 (32-5), Garrett Whitehead at 130 (41-4), Kyle Hinners at 135 (28-13), Kodah Long at 140 (24-10), Jeff Meyer at 145 (18-21) and Avery Sweeney at 160 (26-19).
Pewaukee Regional
Delavan-Darien High School’s won the Division 2 Pewaukee Regional on Saturday to stake a berth in Tuesday’s Whitewater Team Sectional. Delavan-Darien will wrestle Sheboygan Falls in one semifinal match, with the winner likely to face state-ranked Campbellsport in the finals.
“The kids really wrestled well today,” Delavan-Darien coach Craig Lodahl said. “We scored points in every weight class, and that was the key.”
Belleville Regional
Fifth-ranked Lodi is up next for Rock Valley Conference champion Clinton.
The Cougars won the Division 2 regional at Belleville and will wrestle Lodi on Tuesday in a semifinal match of the Mauston Team Sectional.
Clinton was led by individual titles from Daniel Banh at 112, Tim Clothier at 130, Salvador Carranza at 135, Nate McConnell at 140 and Dane Brandl at 160.
