Whippets shock Trojans

Whitewater High pulled off a major victory Thursday night in Rock Valley North girls basketball.


The Whippets, behind 23 points from Julia Shelbourn, went on the road and knocked off once-beaten East Troy, 58-52, dropping the Trojans two games behind first-place Edgerton in the conference loss column.


Whitewater (9-6, 7-4) led by eight points after the first quarter and never looked back in dropping the Trojans to 10-2 in the conference and 15-2 overall.


Freshman Brooke Trewyn added 20 points for the Whippets, while Rachel Atchinson led the Trojans with 16. Breanna Gaspervich added 14 points for East Troy, the state's eighth-ranked Division 3 team.

-- Edgerton 78, Jefferson 57—Edgerton made all 12 of its free throws in the fourth quarter to wrap up a victory over the visiting Eagles and increase its Rock Valley North lead.


The Crimson Tide, No. 7 in the AP Division 3 state ratings, improved to 11-0 in the conference and 15-1 as it moved 1 1/2 games ahead of eighth-ranked East Troy (15-2, 10-2) in the battle for the North championship.


Edgerton raced a 12-point lead over Jefferson (6-11, 6-5) in the first half, but the Eagles were within 36-34 by the intermission. Brooke Ferrell then hit two of her four three-point goals, and Meggie Schmidt scored five points in a 20-12 third quarter that put the Tide in control for good.


Jennifer Gimmer and Megan Johnson each went 4-for-4 on free throws as Edgerton built a 22-11 advantage in the final period.


Schmidt led the Tide with 16 points, while Ferrell and Johnson each scored 14. Alexa Wegner scored 16 for Jefferson.

Freshman Taryn Ciochon led the Cougars (8-9, 4-7) with 12 points. Megan Lantz, also a freshman, scored 10 points for Clinton, while Junior Olivia Nickel added 10.


Lauren Rocizewski led the Panthers (0-17, 0-12) with 12 points.
