Craig losing assistant principal

— A Craig High School assistant principal is resigning, effective Friday, Feb. 18.

Shawn Mangar is leaving the school district to serve as the project leader for Bronx Revolutions Middle School, according to a district news release.

Mangar was hired last summer at an annual salary of $87,453.

Superintendent Karen Schulte said in a statement issued Wednesday that she is saddened to see Mangar leave "but extremely happy for him that he can return home to New York. This opportunity as project leader will afford him the opportunity to use his leadership skills toward educational reform."

Mangar has extensive experience as an educator, including leadership roles, in New York City.

Schulte said she intends to hire a dean of students to fill in at Craig for the rest of this school year.

A dean of students typically deals with discipline and other student issues but does not evaluate teachers. A dean of students typically is paid less than an assistant principal.

The opening might give school board members pause to consider whether to fill it next year. School board member DuWayne Severson on Tuesday called for more administrative positions to be cut to help balance next year's budget.

Each high school now has three assistant principals.

The board in December approved cutting one high school assistant principal position next year. The plan is to keep two assistants at each high school, and the fifth one—Monte Phillips—will work at both schools.

Schulte is considering other administrative reductions. She has floated the idea of hiring only one principal to replace the two principals who are leaving Harrison and Kennedy elementary schools.

The position of Preschool for Janesville coordinator was not filled this year, and Schulte said Tuesday that she expected a retirement from among the central-office curriculum coordinators.

What about placing Leman into Craig? Like most people now a day's, he wants a job, or keep his.

Oh oh, Craig H.S. has lost a layer of bureaucracy! Here's a thought, take Mr. Mangar's responsibilities and spread them among the remaining assistant principals and Dr. Spiegel. They may find they can get by just fine without Mr. Mangar or a successor. After all, since the budget is so challenging that $6.5 million must be cut from it, it's worth a shot. Isn't it?

If the district is cutting such significant numbers of teaching staff and a good portion of them are at the high school level and one of the major duties of an assistant principal is teacher evaluation - it sounds like the JSD won't need another assistant principal. A good dean for the children would be valuable, but don't pay for him/her to get their administrative degree.
