Beloit upsets first-place St. Norbert, women fall

— Beloit College held off host St. Norbert in the second half to post a 57-52 upset victory in Midwest Conference men’s basketball.

The league-leading Green Knights (16-5, 12-4) cut a 50-40 deficit with almost nine minutes remaining to 50-48 with 2:28 to play. The Buccaneers (8-12, 9-7) bounced back to take a 55-50 lead with 31 seconds to play.


St. Norbert (16-5, 12-4) cut the lead to 55-52 with 19 seconds left, but Michael Horton hit a pair of free throws with 17 second left.


David Bremner scored 15 points to lead the Bucs. Travis Towns, an Edgerton High School graduate, and Horton scored 12 points apiece.

Beloit women fall

The Beloit College women’s basketball team made several runs at No. 18-ranked St. Norbert, but the Buccaneers couldn’t turn the corner and lost 65-52 in Midwest Conference play Wednesday.


The Bucs led, 16-14, on a Diana Sopkowicz basket with 6:19 remaining in the first half. The league-leading Green Knights (19-2, 15-1) followed with a 14-0 run and went on to a 31-19 lead at the break.


Beloit got back within 31-25 four minutes into the second half but a 20-9 run put the Green Knights ahead 51-34 with 6:43 remaining. The Bucs fought back to 54-47 with two minutes left, but did not get closer.


Amanda Moore scored 14 points for Beloit, while making four three-pointers for the third straight game. Kandace Fox and Lauren McNanna added 12 points apiece for the Bucs.
