High school classes considered for cuts

— The Janesville School District on Tuesday released a list of 92 high school courses being considered for elimination next fall.

Not every course on the list will be cut, officials cautioned.

The courses listed are the ones that did not garner 24 student sign-ups during the first round of the annual course-selection process.

As in past years, some courses will be exempted from the minimum-size rule, officials said. Superintendent Karen Schulte said others might be:

-- Combined with other courses, for example, German IV and V.

-- Held only at one of the two high schools with students traveling from the other school.

-- Offered at one school and transmitted via the Internet to the other school.

-- Offered through the district's virtual school.

-- If allowed by the state, offered during summer school.

The courses are largely electives.

The school board increased the minimum high school class size from 18 to 24 so that teaching positions could be cut in order to help balance the 2011-2012 budget.

Schulte said the time had come to winnow the number of high school courses, which has grown over the years.

Parker listed 271 courses in its catalog this year. Craig listed 264.

The course-selection process is continuing this week at Craig and Parker high schools. Students who signed up for a course that didn't meet the minimum enrollment requirement are selecting alternative classes.

About 400 students needed to alter their schedules at Parker and 260 at Craig, said Steve Sperry, director of administrative and human services.

Both schools expect to complete the process by the end of today, Sperry said.

Schulte, speaking before Tuesday night's school board meeting, said she would not be able to say how many teaching positions might be cut until the board gives her guidance on how much money it is willing to raise by raising taxes or dipping into district reserves.

The district provided the list after the Gazette made an open-records request. The district did not provide numbers of students who had signed up for each course.

Schulte said she could have simply selected courses for cuts, but she wanted students and their parents to have a say in the process. Because of that decision, the process is messier and more time-consuming than it could have been, Schulte said.


Below are courses the Janesville School District is considering cutting at Craig and Parker high schools in 2011-2012.

Also on the list are courses designated as site specific. These courses would be held at one high school, and students from the other school could travel to attend them.
