Elks roll; Comets honor former coach, other scores

Elkhorn’s boys basketball team played a winning role on a special night at Delavan-Darien High School.


The host Comets honored former coach Beauford Breidenstein, who will be a 2011 inductee into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, but the Elks dominated the rest of the action on the court Tuesday night.


Sparked by an 18-0 shutout in the second quarter, Elkhorn (9-9, 6-4) rolled to 55-25 victory over the Comets (2-16, 1-9) in a Southern Lakes Conference game.


Brock Poggensee, a 5-11 senior guard, led the way with


12-point second quarter and 19-point game for Elkhorn, which broke away from a 10-8 edge to lead 28-8 at halftime.


Kyle Hoskins, a 6-6 senior, had 16 points for Elkhorn, and Ryan Bowes added. Marcus McLin led Delavan-Darien with six.

Jake Jarnigo scored 18 points, and the Warriors raced out to a 16-point halftime lead en route to a 74-64 win.


Ethan Janke had 13 points to lead Marshall, which trailed 65-36 after three quarters.

Stoughton’s Cole Bruseger scored 13 points, while Ben Cleveland scored 12 points and Connor Kowalkowski added 11 points, including a 4-for-4 free-throw effort in the fourth quarter.


Josh Statz scored 16 points to lead Baraboo. Teammates Mark Kowalke and Sean McGann scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
