— A Darien man is charged with felony child abuse on allegations that he struck a 5-year-old boy, giving him a black eye.

The boy told a Walworth County investigator Jan. 28 that he was smacked the day before, according to a criminal complaint.

Jason A. Beals, 33, of 308 Sweet Road, Apt. 303, faces a fine of up to $10,000 and a prison term of up to six years.

According to the complaint:

When the child's mother arrived home from work, she asked the boy what had happened to his eye. He said Beals had struck him with an open hand.

The mother confronted Beals about the boy's injury, and Beals later admitted he had struck the boy in the face. The mother contacted police.

Beals was ordered to appear before Walworth County Judge Robert Kennedy at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15. He is free on bond.
