Beloit High defeated visiting Madison Memorial, 79-69, to take maintain sole possession of first place in the Big Eight Conference boys basketball race Friday.


The Purple Knights improved to 13-1 in the Big Eight to take a 1˝ game lead over Memorial, which fell to 11-2. The Knights moved to 16-2 overall, and Memorial fell to 12-5.


Beloit held a 31-24 lead at the half and built it to 53-38 going into the fourth quarter.


Dennis Crosby scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half for Beloit, while Mike Weston scored 10 of his 12 points in the second quarter. John Winston scored eight of his 16 points in the third quarter.


Memorial fouled Beloit in the fourth quarter, and the Purple Knights made 22 of 33 free throws. Leketrius Broomfield made 13 free throws and finished with 19 points.


Junior Lomomba scored 21 points, and Miles Chamberlain scored 20 points for the Spartans.

Verona’s Danny Burns scored 16 of his 19 points in the final quarter to get the Wildcats to within two points. Nate Ray and Tony Salton each had 13, and Justin Banzhaf added 12.


Alex Brown had 15 points, and Clint Wilson added 12 in the win.
