— There was no looking ahead for Janesville Craig’s girls basketball team Thursday night.

The Cougars had a 15-point lead after one quarter and coasted to a 67-28 Big Eight Conference victory over Madison Memorial.

Eighth-ranked Craig High (14-2, 10-2) hosts third-ranked Middleton (15-1, 12-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, but Cougar coach Kerry Storbakken was pleased with the way his team executed against the last-place Spartans (0-14, 0-12).

“We aren’t looking past anybody,” Storbakken said. “The longer you let a team that is struggling stay in the game, the better the chances they have of finding a way to win. We didn’t allow that to happen tonight.

“Everybody had a chance to play, and 12 girls scored. It was a nice win and a good warm-up for Middleton.”

Amanda Hamilton, Cierra Sroda and Emily Hinman had 12 points each to lead the Cougars.

Craig lost 68-50 to Middleton the first time around after falling behind by 15 points in the first quarter. Storbakken doesn’t expect a repeat performance.

“We’ve got them at home, and we haven’t lost at home all season,” Storbakken said. “I have all the respect for Middleton, but traditionally, they don’t play well in our gym.

“I really like the way our kids our playing, but we better come ready to play because Middleton doesn’t let up.

“It’s two teams ranked in the top 10 in the state playing each other, and you don’t see that very often during the regular season. It’s going to come down to whoever makes the most shots.”
