Janesville Parker’s defense shuts down Tremper

— Janesville Craig High girls basketball team exploded for 22 points in the first quarter en route to a 62-53 victory Tuesday over visiting Oregon to open its Optimist Tournament.

“We hit them with a 22 spot in the first quarter,” Craig coach Kerry Storbakken said. “That was real good to see in front of the home crowd.’’


Alli Calkins scored six of her 13 points in the first quarter for Craig. Kristi Crandall and Emilie O’Donnell added three-point baskets.


The Cougars held a 22-11 lead and finished the half with a 37-27 advantage. Craig never lost the lead to gain its fourth straight victory.


Craig made 23 of 30 free throws to ensure the victory.


“It was a little different than the last game against La Follette,” Storbakken said. “We made 8 for 25 and came back with 23 of 30. We nailed them.’’


Calkins and Michaela Holzhuter scored 13 points apiece to lead four Cougars in double figures. Crandall added 11 points and Brooke Negus chipped in 10 points.


Maddy Gits, a 6-1 sophomore, led all scorers with 17 points for Oregon.


Craig plays Appleton North at 7:45 tonight.

-- Parker 45, Tremper 26—The Vikings relied on stout defense, holding the Trojans to single digits in each quarter in the La Crosse Logan Tournament.


The Vikings held an 8-5 lead after the first quarter, and made 7 of 10 free throws in the second period to gain a 17-6 advantage for a 25-11 halftime lead.


Neither team had a player score in double figures.


Parker (6-2) faces Osseo-Fairchild at 2:45 p.m. today.
