Whitewater Warhawk men log another win

— UW-Whitewater overcame a nine-point first-half deficit to defeat Whitworth, 76-61, Wednesday in the National Invitational Tournament at Trinity University.

Whitewater, ranked No. 16 in the D3hoops poll, is 10-1. No. 8 Whitworth is 7-2.

The Pirates clicked off a 7-0 run to end the first half to take a 33-24 lead. Whitworth made 10 of 18 field goals, including a 3-for-3 effort from three-point range in the first half. Whitewater made 7 of 28 from the floor, including a 2-for-9 effort from three-point range.

Whitewater got back into the game, reeling off a 9-0 run to open the second half. Cody Odegaard sank two straight threes and Chris Davis added a three-point play to tie the game at 33.

The game remained close until Whitewater ran off seven straight points for a 50-44 lead. Quardell Young’s three-point play gave the Warhawks a 58-49 lead with eight minutes remaining.

It was all Whitewater the rest of the way as the Warhawks rolling to a 70-56 lead with 6:41 remaining. Whitworth cut the deficit to nine points, but could draw no closer.

Davis scored 22 points to lead four Warhawks in double figures. Alex Merg and Odegaard scored 14 points apiece and Young chipped in 13 points.

The Warhawks travel to Marian University in Fond du Lac at 7 p.m. next Friday.
