— Janesville Craig High School outlasted Madison La Follette to post a 37-34 victory Tuesday in Big Eight Conference girls basketball.

The Cougars notched their third straight Big Eight victory to improve to 3-2 in the league.

Craig gained a 17-9 advantage in the third quarter to erase a 16-14 first-half deficit and take a 31-25 lead into the fourth quarter.

Nicole Kelly scored six points to start the third, while teammate Brooke Negus and Kristi Crandall sank back-to-back three-point baskets to propel Craig to the lead.

Craig hung on to the lead in the fourth quarter despite making just four of 15 free throws.

While the Cougars struggled on offense, coach Kerry Storbakken said they made up for it on defense.

“Michaela Holzhuter played excellent defense on Claire Gloede, La Follette’s top scorer,” Storbakken said. “Gloede made one free throw in the second half and she averages 13 points a game.’’

La Follette did not have a player score in double figures. Kelly finished with 10 for the Cougars.

Craig hosts Oregon at 7:45 p.m. next Tuesday in the Optimist Tournament.
