— After six straight defeats, including five in Big Eight Conference play, the Janesville Parker boys basketball team responded with a big effort Saturday night at Verona.

Andrew Somerville scored 22 points, and senior Charlie Grafft added a career-high 19 to lead the Vikings to a 69-57 victory.

Coach Ryan Masterson said it was an excellent way to go into the holiday break.

“That’s how I thought we were capable of playing,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “We played good defense for four quarters and ran our offense.”

Grafft provided the main spark. After several rough games, the 6-foot-9 senior responded with the 19 points and seven rebounds.

Erik Albeck added 11 points, and Decker Thompson had 10.

Parker took advantage of Verona’s Bryan Dalton. The 6-5 senior scored 19 points but fouled out.

“When Dalton got into foul trouble, we started running the ball at him,” Masterson said.

The Vikings also did a better job from the free-throw line. The Vikings made 19 of 25 after going just 11 of 25 in their last game.

“That was huge,” Masterson said. “That helped give us the lead in the first quarter. I knew once we got up on someone, we would play with confidence. I’m so happy how we responded.”

Parker (2-6 overall, 1-5 in the Big Eight) is idle until playing Lake Geneva Badger at home Jan. 3 in a nonconference game.
