— The Whitewater Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying those who vandalized Birge Fountain at 1:50 a.m. Sunday.

The fountain at 402 W. Main St. was restored this summer. Damage is estimated at $500.

The fountain stands 17 1/2 feet tall and is named after donor Julius Birge, who was the first person born to European settlers in Walworth County.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is encouraged to call the Whitewater Police Department at (262) 473-0555 or the anonymous tip line at (262) 723-2677.

Photos of the vandalism taken by a video-surveillance camera are available at whitewater-wi.gov.
