Sun Prairie scores early to down Janesville Bluebirds

— The visiting Janesville Bluebirds lost, 6-3, to Sun Prairie in Big Eight Conference boys hockey Tuesday.

Janesville is 2-3 in the Big Eight and 5-3 overall.

The Cardinals jumped on the Bluebirds for a 2-0 lead in the first period. Tanner Woodman scored twice in the second period and Janesville trailed 3-2 after Woodman’s second from Connor Perkins and D.J. Mussey at 14:33.

The Cards scored with seven second remaining in the second for a 4-2 lead and flatten the Bluebirds.

“We just shot ourselves in the foot,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “We were in the power play with 1:23 to go, and we take a penalty and we’re on the short hand and give up a goal with seven seconds to go.’’

Sun Prairie scored at 11:57 and 13:00 of the third to seal the victory. Trevor Kelley scored Janesville’s final goal at 16:55.

“Sun Prairie came out with a lot of energy, and we had no answer,” Mauermann said.

The Bluebirds play Madison La Follette at 8 p.m. Thursday at Hartmeyer Ice Arena.
