Whitewater, Big Foot, Evansville among basketball winners

Free throws proved to be the difference Tuesday night for Whitewater’s girls basketball team in a battle of Rock Valley North preseason favorites.

The Whippets made 29 free throws, including 12 from Brooke Trewyn, in rallying for a 58-57 win over East Troy.

Whitewater (2-1, 1-0) trailed by five after three quarters but outscored East Troy (1-1, 0-1) 20-14 in the fourth.

Trewyn and Molly Grice had 14 points each for the Whippets, while Nicole Masterson added 13 and Sarah Schumacher 10.

East Troy’s Rachel Atchison led all scorers with 16.

-- Big Foot 60, Parkview 54—Walworth Big Foot built a double-digit lead in the first quarter, then rallied in the final quarter to defeat host Orfordville Parkview in a Rock Valley Conference girls basketball game Tuesday night.

Jen Petkoff scored 13 of her 17 points to help the visiting Chiefs to a 30-26 halftime lead. Big Foot led 18-7 after one quarter, but Parkview slowly cut into the lead and took a 42-41 lead into the final quarter.

Then the Chiefs rallied behind junior Brittani Isham, who had been held to five points through three quarters. Isham scored seven points in the fourth quarter to help the Chiefs rally.

Lindsay Mazur had 11 points for the Chiefs, 1-1 overall, 1-0 in the RVC.

Junior guard Emily Harnack led the Vikings with 20 points, while Mikayla Strzok had 10.

Parkview is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Evansville (1-1, 1-0) led by six after three quarters before pulling away in the fourth.

Mallory Niemann had 14 points for Clinton (2-0, 1-0), while Taryn Ciochon and Heather Buckler had 13 each. Sam Morateck had eight points for Palmyra-Eagle (0-2, 0-1).
