— John F. Delaney was named Walworth County Jail administrator Monday, filling a position that's been left vacant since spring.

Delaney has been the assistant jail administrator since 2000 and before that served as the assistant chief of environmental management services with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Minnesota and Nebraska, according to a news release issued Monday.

Delaney fills a position previously held by Michael Schmitz, who retired April 15. A hiring freeze by the county left the position in question after his departure, and Delaney served as acting administrator for the last eight months.

Delaney is a graduate of Elkhorn Area High School. He earned his criminal justice and political science degrees from UW-Oshkosh and his master's degree in occupational safety at UW-Whitewater.

He also attended Northwestern University's School of Police Staff and Command, correctional leadership development through the state Department of Justice and National Jail Leadership Command Academy, according to the news release.
