Two more take out Janesville City Council papers

— Michael Southers, 40, of 1841 S. Chatham St., and Brad Westness, 27, of 3421 Ruger Ave., are the fourth and fifth Janesville residents to announce their intentions to run for the Janesville City Council.

Four seats are open on the council. Three openings are two-year terms and the fourth is a one-year term.

Southers works for Rock County in computer support/instruction.

Westness is employed by UW-Whitewater as a website designer.

Neither has sought public office before.

Other candidates are Jim Farrell, 65, of 1427 N. Harmony Drive; Billy R. McCoy, 58, of 1326 Putnam Ave.; and Angela Smillie, 31, of 921 N. Garfield Ave.

Two incumbents—Tom McDonald and Yuri Rashkin—are not seeking re-election. Incumbent Kathy Voskuil has not decided whether she will seek another term.

Residents who want to run for a seat on the council must pick up nomination papers at City Hall, 18 N. Jackson St., and gather not less than 200 signatures but not more than 400 signatures.

The completed forms must be returned to city hall no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3.
