Janesville Jets prepare for opener

— Lace up the skates. The 2011-12 Janesville Jets season is right around the corner.

A total of 27 players reported to Janesville on Sunday, and two-a-day practice sessions began on Monday at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.


Janesville is beginning its third season in the North American Hockey League. The Jets will move to the Midwest Division this season, which also includes Chicago, Coulee Region, Springfield and St. Louis.


Thirteen players return for Janesville, but two key pieces from last seasonís playoff team have moved on. Ross Mauermann, a 2009 Janesville Parker graduate and the Jetsí all-time leading scorer, is now playing at Providence University. David Jacobson, also a 2009 Janesville Parker graduate and the NAHLís third-ranked goaltender last season, is playing at St. Norbert College.


Janesville will host an exhibition game against the Twin Cities Northern Lights at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.


The Jets open the 2011-12 season Sept. 14 as part of the NAHL Showcase Tournament in Blaine, Minn. The tournament runs from Sept 14-17.


Janesvilleís first NAHL home game is at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, against the Springfield Jr. Blues at the Janesville Ice Skating Center.

Cecere commits to Colorado College

Defenseman Garrett Cecere of the Janesville Jets has committed to play for Colorado College beginning in the 2014 season.


The 16-year-old Cecere, who will be a junior at Janesville Craig, recently played for Team USA in the U17 Five Nations Tournament. Team USA finished 4-0-0 in the tournament, defeating Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland.


Cecere is from West Des Moines, Iowa and played last season for Shattuck St. Maryís in Faribault, Minn.


Past Janesville Jets players to commit to Division 1 schools are Ross Mauermann (Providence), Larkin Jacobson (University of Denver) and Rui Encarnacao (University of Connecticut).
