— Coach Domanic Wiegel is taking the long view on Janesville Craig High School’s girls golf team.

“We have 10 underclassmen among the 13 girls out,” Wiegel said. “We are in the top half number-wise in the league.’’

Craig hosts Sun Prairie and Beloit Memorial in a Big Eight opener at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Riverside Golf Course.

It’s Wiegel’s hope the young team can steadily cut down strokes to become one of the top teams in the conference. He said it’s a process that has no shortcuts.

Ashley Hermans, a junior, plays No. 1 for the Cougars. Wiegel hopes the younger players follow Hermans’ steady road to improvement.

“Ashley has decreased her scoring average 10 strokes between her freshman and sophomore years,” he said. “Now she has an outside chance of making all-conference.’’

Hermans, who had a 97 average as a sophomore, practiced and grew up.

“She got in a good summer program and hit a few hundred balls,” Wiegel said. “She matured, and now, instead of pulling out a driver on every hole, she uses an iron and takes the trouble out of play.’’

Laura Squire, a sophomore, is being counted on to help Craig.

“She is the second-most consistent golfer,” Wiegel said. “She doesn’t shoot great, but she doesn’t go over 110.”

Bailey Green, a senior, averaged 111 along with Hayley Arneson as a sophomore last season.

“Bailey’s consistency is not there yet,” Weigel said. “We are hoping for a few rounds under 100. Hayley is capable of shooting in the low 90s.”

Sarah Holford, a sophomore, averaged 126 last season, Abby Schaefer, a senior, averaged 131. Alex LaPoint, a sophomore, averaged 127.

“We have a young program,” Wiegel said. “We have a lot of potential.’’
