Hartwig leads way for young Janesville Parker Vikings
The Vikings have only three seniors on the roster and only three players with varsity experience.
Parker begins the season Friday at the Cougar/Tider Invitational.
“We are young and fairly inexperienced,” said Parker coach Dave Lehmann, now entering his 18th season. “We will need to play tough defense and keep the ball in play.
“My biggest concern is that we are not very tall in a conference where there is a lot of height.”
Middle hitter Ashley Hartwig leads the list of returnees for Parker. The junior was all-conference honorable mention last season for a Parker team that was fifth in the Big Eight.
“Ashley’s got a powerful shot and is a strong player,” Lehmann said. “And she needs that because she is going to be trying to block some much taller players across the net.”
Senior Natalie McDonald returns as the libero, while senior Ashley Ross will play setter/outside hitter. Senior Rachael Hearn will also play setter.
“We need to hustle and depend on our few returners,” Lehmann said. “And our younger players are going to have to develop fast.
“Our conference is so strong that we may struggle at first. There are seven or eight outstanding teams in our conference.”
Lehmann is also counting on junior Dani Fugate at right hitter, junior Claire Gorman at outside hitter and junior Ally Dahlgren at middle hitter.
