— A Beloit man is in custody after he led police on a chase across western Rock County.

Brodhead police arrested Robert J. Ellifritz, 19, 1419 Porter Ave., Beloit, on charges of felony criminal damage to property, hit and run of an attended vehicle, felony fleeing to elude officers, second-degree reckless endangerment, and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, according to Green County Jail records.

He is suspected of fleeing from police after he was stopped on suspicion of intoxicated driving, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

Brodhead police stopped Ellifritz at 3:20 a.m. Saturday. Ellifritz fled in his 1993 GMC Sonoma. His truck struck a Brodhead Police Department squad car at 3:33 a.m. near First Center Avenue and 21st Street, according to a news release from the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

He led police east on Highway 11.

Rock County deputies deployed stop sticks near Brodhead Street outside Orfordville and again at Highway H in Center Township, eventually stopping the vehicle. Ellifritz ran into a heavily wooded area off Highway 11 and eluded police and Janesville Police’s K-9 unit.

According to the Rock County news release, Ellifritz was taken into custody at home a short time later and at 9:40 a.m. was returned to Brodhead police and taken to the Green County Jail where he is awaiting his initial court appearance.
