Verona surges past Sun Prairie; Middleton blanks Beloit

Verona High School’s football team used a big second half to make a major statement on the Big Eight Conference’s opening night.


The visiting Wildcats rushed for 223 yards in the second half to pull away from a 7-3 halftime edge and gain a 28-10 victory over Sun Prairie in a battle of defending co-champions.


Verona’s big-play offense made the difference. Tyler Parker scored on a 41-yard run in the first quarter and closed the scoring on another 41-yard run with 4:03 left in the game. He finished with 16 rushing attempts for 194 yards.


Kaleb Lawrence’s 52-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left in the third quarter pulled Verona away from a 14-10 lead.


Donte Starlin-Merriam rushed 17 for 108 yards to lead Sun Prairie.

Middleton scored three times on a 126 yards of offense in the second quarter to build a 20-0 halftime lead. Beloit gained 50 yards of total offense to Middleton’s 259.


Middleton’s Otto Vasquez gained 80 yards on 17 carries and scored one touchdown.
