Evansville High’s football team went down to wire Friday night to win its nonconference opener.

Dalton Sendelbach’s 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, followed by two late pass interceptions, led the Blue Devils to a 14-9 victory over visiting Sparta.

Sendelbach gained 105 yards on 23 attempts and scored two touchdowns. His 17-yard run gave Evansville a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Sparta scored on Brandon Burnham’s 4-yard run in the second quarter to force a 7-7 halftime tie.

Evansville’s winning drive started at the Sparta 25 late in the third quarter. Sendelbach scored on the fifth play of the drive.

Sparta drove deep into Evansville territory, but Kale George of the Blue Devils intercepted a pass to end the threat.

Evansville took over at its 3-yard line, but went three-and-out. An errant Evansville center snap on the punt attempt hit the goal post crossbar and bounced out of the end zone for a safety, accounting for the game’s final two points.

Zachary Schneider’s interception with 1:30 to play sealed the victory for Evansville.
