The Janesville 14-year-old baseball tournament team is one win away from a berth in the Babe Ruth World Series.

Janesville used a pair of five-run innings Tuesday to defeat South Lexington (Ky.), 11-5, in the Ohio Valley Regional at Robinson, Ill.

The local team will play South Lexington at 1 p.m. today, and the Kentucky team will have to beat coach Ron Kobs’ team twice to advance, while Janesville needs only one win.

“We’ve put ourselves in a great position, but we haven’t won anything yet,” Kobs said. “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse.

“What I’m most proud about today is that the kids didn’t play their best baseball but still found a way to get it done. And our bats came alive at the right time.”

South Lexington loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs, but Nick Blomgren struck out the next three batters to end the game.

Trailing 2-0, Janesville scored five runs in the top of the fourth. Alex Marro and Connor Bowen each had two-run singles for Janesville in the inning.

South Lexington tied the game in the fifth, but Janesville took the lead for good on Charlie Platts’ sacrifice fly. Janesville pulled away with five runs in the seventh.

“We haven’t played from behind all year, so it was good to us bounce back and get the lead again in the third,” Kobs said. “After that, it seems like every kid in the lineup came up with a clutch hit when we needed it.

“Hopefully, we can keep it up tomorrow.”
