14s one win away from title bracket
Janesville won its second game of the tournament, 11-1, over Henderson, Ky., on Monday afternoon. The local squad plays at 3 p.m. today.
Janesville has outscored its two opponents, 20-2.
“They’re making it easy for us,” coach Ron Kobs said of the players. “They’re playing phenomenal ball, doing everything right.”
The local squad jumped on Henderson starter Drew Babbs for six runs in the first inning to take command. Janesville starter Jarod Hoffarth had a two-run single in the inning, and 12 Janesville hitters went to the plate.
A two-run sixth inning ended the game because of the 10-run-lead mercy rule.
Connor Bowen, Nick Blomgren, Kevin Brandt, Alex Marro and MaCauley Cox each had two hits in Janesville’s 12-hit attack.
Blomgren drove in three runs and scored twice, while Bowen and Cox each scored twice. Bowen and Brandt had doubles, while Cox tripled.
Hoffarth allowed just five hits. He struck out one.
“Our pitching has been fantastic,” Kobs said. “They’re throwing strikes.”
Alex Faust will start today against South Lexington, which had to go through several pitchers while defeating Zanesville (Ohio), 9-8, on Monday.
That gives Janesville an advantage going into the matchup of the only undefeated teams left in the double-elimination tournament.
“I like where we are,” Kobs said. “We have a lot of fresh arms. I don’t think (South Lexington) is any better than (Henderson).
“If they keep playing like this, we’ll be tough to beat,” Kobs said.
