— Janesville Craig High School produced the right mix of pitching and clutch hitting Friday to defeat visiting Madison West, 6-3, in Big Eight Conference baseball at Riverside Park.

Craig starting pitcher Cody Steed allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out 10 and issuing only one walk for the complete-game victory.

While Steed kept the Regents at bay, the Cougars pounded out 10 hits, including catcher Charlie Meyer’s solo home run and Mitch Perkins’ clutch two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning.

Craig improved to 3-4 in the Big Eight and 5-4 overall.

“Steed had a solid performance,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “As the game went along, he located his pitches, and the fifth and sixth were his best innings.’’

Meyer’s solo homer in the third gave Craig a 4-0 lead, but West bounced back with two runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Perkins’ came up with his double in the bottom of the inning to give the Cougars back their four-run lead.

“That was a clutch hit,” Herbst said. “It gave us our cushion back.’’

Craig travels to Beaver Dam today for a noon doubleheader.
