First-place Whitewater sweeps past Platteville

WHITEWATER — UW-Whitewater defeated visiting UW-Platteville 12-2 in seven innings and 7-6 in 10 innings Wednesday to complete a four-game season sweep of the Pioneers in WIAC baseball on Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium.

The victories lifted ninth-ranked Whitewater to a league-leading 13-3 in the WIAC and 23-5 overall. Platteville fell to 6-14, 8-23.

In Game 1, Platteville held a 2-1 first-inning lead, but Whitewater rallied for four runs in the second and went on to post a 10-run rule victory in seven innings.

Whitewater pounded out 16 hits, while Platteville was held to two. Warhawk starter Riley Tincher (5-2) allowed two runs on two hits through the first five innings for the victory.

In Game 2, Platteville reliever Bill Oppreicht’s throwing error in the 10th inning allowed Janesville Parker graduate Matt Beyer to score the winning run from second base.

Jeff Donovan went the distance for Whitewater, allowing six runs on 10 hits.

Whitewater travels to UW-Oshkosh for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.
