President Barack Obama pauses while speaking about his birth certificate, Wednesday in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington.

— Responding to critics' relentless claims, President Barack Obama on Wednesday produced a detailed Hawaii birth certificate in an extraordinary attempt to bury the issue of where he was born and confirm his legitimacy to hold office. He declared, "We do not have time for this kind of silliness."

By going on national TV from the White House, Obama portrayed himself as a voice of reason amid a loud, lingering debate on his birth status. Though his personal attention to the issue elevated it as never before, Obama said to Republican detractors and the media, it is time to move on to bigger issues.

Citing huge budget decisions in Washington, Obama said, "I am confident that the American people and America's political leaders can come together in a bipartisan way and solve these problems. We always have. But we're not going to be able to do it if we are distracted."

Obama spoke shortly after the White House released a copy of the long form of his birth certificate, which contains more extensive data than a version released earlier.

The certificate says Obama was born to an American mother and Kenyan father, in Hawaii, which makes him constitutionally eligible to hold the office of president. Obama released a standard short form before he was elected in 2008 but requested copies of his original birth certificate from Hawaii officials this week in hopes of quieting the lingering controversy.

White House officials have said the issue was settled long ago. But so-called "birthers" opposed to Obama have kept it alive. Potential Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently began questioning why Obama, a Democrat, had not ensured the long form was released.

From the early primary state of New Hampshire, Trump took credit for getting Obama to act.

"He should have done it a long time ago. I am really honored to play such a big role in hopefully, hopefully getting rid of this issue," Trump said.

Polls show large numbers of Republicans have continued to doubt Obama is a natural born citizen eligible to be president. Trump, the bombastic real estate mogul, has seized on the issue as he weighs a GOP candidacy.

While Obama and White House officials avoided mentioning Trump by name, officials said they released the birth certificate partially because the issue had moved beyond fringe discussion, and Obama criticized a media culture that had not let the story go.

"This issue has been going on for two, two and a half years now. I think it started during the campaign," Obama said. "I have watched with bemusement, I've been puzzled at the degree at which this thing just kept on going."

"We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers," the president said.

He did not take any questions and did not say why the document had not been released earlier.

Many Republican leaders have sought to distance themselves from the "birther" theory as a discredited notion not worthy of national public debate.

In a statement after Obama spoke, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called the issue a distraction — and yet blamed Obama for playing campaign politics by addressing it.

"The president ought to spend his time getting serious about repairing our economy," Priebus said. "Unfortunately his campaign politics and talk about birth certificates is distracting him from our number one priority — our economy."

The newly released certificate is signed by the delivery doctor, Obama's mother and the local registrar. His mother, then 18, signed her name (Stanley) Ann Dunham Obama.

The form says Barack Hussein Obama II was born at 7:24 p.m. on Aug. 4, 1961, at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital, within the city limits of Honolulu.

There is no mention of religion. It says his father, Barack Hussein Obama, age 25, was African and born in Kenya and his mother was Caucasian and born in Wichita, Kan. Obama's mother and the doctor signed the certificate on Aug. 7 and 8.Hawaii's registrar certified the new photocopy of the document provided to the White House on April 25, 2011.

The White House also released a letter from the president on April 22 requesting two certified copies of his original certificate of live birth. Also released was a letter from Loretta Fuddy, Hawaii's director of health, approving the request.

The president's personal counsel, Judith Corley, traveled to Hawaii to pick up the documents and carried them back to Washington on a plane. The documents arrived at the White House late Tuesday.

Does POTUS' brother who lives in a hut in Kenya have a birth certificate? Actually, it is of little significance,I often wonder if POTUS gives a darn about him living in poverty in a tiny hut. So many questions about obummer and family, so few straight answers. If it was a GOP president, all of the questions would have been answered by the government run media long ago.

At this point who would ever believe that the BC he presented is real. Its obviously a fake. The reality is -- theres nothing about him thats real. The very fact that people are going to the town hall meetings that Ryan is holding, indicates that people are interested and want to know what is going on.
If you want to be angry at someone, direct it to potus.

Here something you can mull over:

Discovered: An UNLIMITED Obamacare Slush Fund

Just when we thought there were no more brazen audacities left to report about in Obamacare, here comes a doozy.

House Republicans have uncovered, tucked away in Section 1311(a) of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), an UNLIMITED Obamacare implementation slush fund.

That's right. Unlimited.

An open tap on the US Treasury, this little gem -- discovered by Representative Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee -- can be used for anything the President wants to spend taxpayer money on, under the guise of "actitivites related to establishing" Obamacare health benefit exchanges.

Here's the relevant legal language from 1311(a):

(1) PLANNING AND ESTABLISHMENT GRANTS.—There shall be appropriated to the Secretary, out of any moneys in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, an amount necessary to enable the Secretary to make awards, not later than 1 year after enactment of this Act, to States in amounts specified in paragraph (2) for the uses described in paragraph (3).

(2) AMOUNT SPECIFIED.—For each fiscal year, the Secretary shall determine the total amount that the Secretary will make available to each State for grants under this subsection.

(3) USE OF FUNDS.—A State shall use amounts awarded under this subsection for activities (including planning activities) related to establishing an American Health Benefit Exchange, as described in subsection (b).

. . .

(4)(B).-- “No grant shall be awarded under this subsection after January 1, 2015.”

While this language thankfully shuts down the slush fund in 2015, it provides absolutely no limit on how much can be spent before then, and only the vaguest guidance on how it's spent. It's so vague, in fact, that any determined socialist could sail an ocean liner through it.

And he is.

Maybe neocons cannot untie the ideas of respect for a political position and unbridled religious worship of political figures, but we on the left certainly can, and do. There is no feeling of reverence to accompany my feeling of respect for him. Wislady just likes to bring her irrationality and hysterical propensities to the forefront.

Reagan may have been great, but he was nothing more than a frontman(puppet). Unfortunate because I think his heart was in it before his brain went. There is a video clip where his Chief of staff tells him "wrap it up". Again it seems to me that he was severely affected by Alzhiemers disease as early as 1983.
Obama's legacy has yet to be determined, IMO. While I am personally disappointed in him thus far, I feel he inherited the nation in about the worst shape its EVER been in. Then of course he is to blame IMMEDIATELY by his opponents and everyone else for 30+ years of bad economic policy. Is it really his fault that it all came crashing down just befor he took office? Problem for me is that he has propigated NOTHING to change the BS that got us here. Ontop of the fact that he faces a nation that is largely racist and prejudice and looking for a reason to see him fail.
What Obama has going for him is the republicans have not fielded ONE candidate worth voting for. EVERY single one of them has issues. The only reasonable one(to me) seems boring and not attracting any attention, is Tim Pawlenty. He speaks in a lot of hyperbole, but is far more intelligent than the rest(except Newt) , and seems to be likable. A campaign between him and the president would at least be intellectually stimulating. Any of the others would just be an enormous waste of money and be a 3 ring circus.

I would agree with RAF and others who point out that Hilary was the first to bring up the issue, look where it got her. That is why I don't understand why Obama even released this. If I were him I would have let them continue to run with this trash. Total non-issue and very desparate opponents look silly in their pursuit of this one. partisan or not this is the dumbest attack on a president, ever! I believe it to be racially motivated.
Remember GWB was a dry drunk, and a former cocaine usert, and there were far fewer questions asked about that. Bill Clinton was an accused RAPIST and that went almost unnoticed. Why is this issue even a news story? i honestly believe this country is inherantly racist in general. Not everyone, but many certainly are, whether they admit it or not. look at the church story now getting run on Fox AGAIN!! While I am VERY disappointed with Obama as a president, his church or his "citizenship" should NOT be issues here. BTW if some think I am being quick to play the racist card here, tell me how the 25% of the nation STLL believes he is a "closet Muslim". Wouldnt that be racism? I think so.

Paul Ryan hung himself with his "path to prosperity", he gets killed in a general because of his Medicare and SS ideas. Kaysbrew, that you would even say, "purple or pink" shows how racist you truly are. I know you probably won't get this, but I'm going to try anyway. Although race is a social construct and has no biological basis; culturally it is a fact. Making up pretend race colors is a pathetic attempt by racist people to invalidate the real issues of race in our country.
My guess is you don't even know how racist you are. That ignorance is what keeps racism alive.

holbachsnature: so what's the alternative? Supply-side and demand-side economics, as preached by the right and left, respectively, both assume a free market in a closed system. Neither actually exists. It doesn't matter which side you dump money into, either way it immediately leaves the economy. You give tax breaks to one side to create jobs, and they do: in China. You give money to the other side to create demand, and it does: for Chinese products. The only realistic solution is to remove the incentive to export jobs.
.
Yes, that will mean that the standard of living will go down, but is there any scenario in which it doesn't? We haven't paid American wages for American products for decades because our economy has always relied on exploitation. That's not a judgment, just an observation. Eventually, however, the people we exploit either get sick of it, get a better offer, or accumulate enough wealth that they begin to compete with us for resources. Our relationship with China in particular is, by design, one way. Money goes in but never comes back out.
.
We're addicted to cheap labor, but like any other addiction, it will kill us unless we give it up. This isn't politics, it's just math. It doesn't matter what we claim to believe, we vote every time we go to Walmart (again- not a judgment. Most products today can't be purchased from a domestic manufacturer even if you tried).
.
We can have jobs, here, today. But it means no more cheap products. If you have a solution that creates jobs at a real living wage that doesn't require significant belt-tightening by every single American then please, let us know. I certainly can't think of one.
.
To put it another way: barring the discovery of a new group of people to exploit, a lower standard of living is an inevitability. The question is simply on whose terms. I prefer the scenario that allows us to retain control of our economy.

Capitalist corporations will always seek the lowest cost of manufacturing and operations. That's their mission, their purpose, they don't hide from that fact nor should they. They will look you in the eye and tell you honesty, "Profit is not a dirty word."

Jobs are lost when American manufacturers move operations to places where doing business is less expensive. Free-trade economics says that they should be "free" to do just that.

If we lower the standard of living of American workers, as I stated in my previous post, American corporations will have incentive to stay in America.

But remember common-folk conservatives, that means you too. The right-wing candidates who you support very likely think you get paid too much and that you recieve far too many basic tax-funded services. They think we all do. Unless of course one of them has figured out a way to lower the wages and limit the services of just us pinko, commies...

What the Trump crowd either doesn't understand or refuses to admit, is that the only way to make America competitive with countries like China is to lower the standard of living of American working families.

Eliminating organized labor, eliminating basic social services, eliminating minimun wage protections, loosening regulatory requirments on environmental impact, workers safety and product safety, all of these things will work to make America more competitive... They will also work to make American Companies more profitable... They will also work to lower the aggregate standard of living.

Corporate America is absolutely working towards making America more competitive. The Tea-Party believes in making America more competitive. Most people who associate themselves with the aforementioned policies of free-trade economics believe that those policies will make America more competitive.

Corporate supporters of these policies don't want us to know the truth

Common folk, working people, who support these policies either don't understand their ultimate goal and impact or will be happy with a Chinese standard of living.

Perhaps if you did just one minute of searching you would find:
Chester A. Arthur - 21st president
The focus on his place of birth became an issue in the 1880 presidential campaign, when Arthur was tapped to be the running mate for Garfield.
According to historical accounts, Republican bosses wanted him to provide proof of his birthplace, but he never did.
http://www.cleveland.com/nation/index.ss...

Ahh, but there’s more…
historian Greg Dehler, author of "Chester Allan Arthur", Published by Nova Science Publishers, Incorporated, 2006 ISBN 1600210791, 9781600210792 192 pages. ]
I’ve been forwarded the actual naturalization record for William Arthur on microfiche, obtained from the Library of Congress. He was naturalized in New York State and became a United States citizen in August 1843.
Chester Arthur perpetrated a fraud as to his eligibility to be Vice President by spreading various lies about his parents’ heritage. President Arthur’s father, William Arthur, became a United States citizen in August 1843. But Chester Arthur was born in 1829. Therefore, he was a British Citizen by descent, and a dual citizen at birth, if not his whole life.

Unfortunately, it's a copy. You'd have to send Abby to HI to test the original document (and test the ink, or else they'd claim it was someone else's cert., altered).

I've never understood why it matters. That rule was written in an era that saw royal families marrying for political reasons- so the King of one country was a guy who had never even been there, but married into the job, or was next in like because his aunt had married a duke at one point. So you had Frenchmen running England from Germany (or what we now call the regions in question). It's understandably annoying, or it was back then, but it's not exactly a pressing issue here, today.

Also, Trump? Really? The only thing I can think of that would be more absurd would be fictional characters. I wonder how many votes John Galt would get...

That said, I actually do agree with winterstinks about the what, just not the who. Tarriffs are the only way to rescue what's left of our ecconomy. Of course, that would have the exact opposite effect on prices(they would go up, not down, winterstinks), but whatever.

They hate black people and never tire of acting like three-year old children in their quest to prove their hatred for diversity, and for America. billnewbie,
Man you are pathetic. This crap is not President Obama's fault. This is republican radio and republican cable news (FOX) and the IDIOTS that believe the crap (my own mother included).
.
President Obama released the form needed to get a passport. CNN did an entire story on it Monday and Tuesday night. They interviewed the joke, Donald Trump. In addition, they went to Hawaii and investigated this story.
.
I give CNN much more credit for this decision by our president than I do, the joke, Donald Trump.
.
President Obama, our first black president, has been held to a higher standard from day one. This attempt by the right wing, republican conservatives to convince people he is not a US citizen is motivated by racism. There is NO OTHER EXCUSE for this crap. If you listen to the people who bought into it they are racist. They HATE our president. They don't hate because of his policies they hate because he is black.
.
The republicans don't believe these racists are they mainstream $$ supporter but if you can get them to vote it could mean a W vs. a L.
.
Racism is very motivating.
.
BTW, I doubt this ends it. I guarantee that in the next 3 days Fox News questions if the document released is legit. Rush, Palin, Beck, Trump will hint that they still have "questions".
