Recount confirms Geneva supervisor's victory

GENEVA TOWNSHIP — Jim Daily held on to his town of Geneva supervisor's seat Tuesday after a recount confirmed he narrowly defeated incumbent Keith Millard.

Daily was declared the winner after last week's election showed he beat Millard by three votes, 528-525. A recount confirmed the outcome, actually taking one vote away from Millard and adding three to write-ins.

"I'm a little disappointed, but that's about it," Millard said. "I wish things could have worked out."

Millard, who served four years on the town board, said he likely will run again for an elected position.

The board will have three new members when it meets Monday, May 9. Joe Kopecky ousted Chairman Dan Lauderdale and Supervisor Bob Kamps did not seek another term. Merle Loomer defeated Gene Decker for Kamps' seat.

Kopecky and Loomer both previously served on the town board. Kopecky was town chairman from 1996-2006.

Daily considers himself the newcomer of the group, but he said the board is ready to tackle to town's toughest issues without raising taxes.

Among the board's biggest decisions will be the future of its town hall. Some believe a new one must be built, while others argue it's a waste of taxpayer funds.

"Probably the biggest thing that this board faces is trying to make our way through this difficult economic time," Daily said. "Our thoughts are trying to maintain the quality of life that we have here. I think the previous board has done that, but we can bring a little bit of an adjustment."
