Milton students off to democracy seminar

MILTON — For the second year in a row, the Milton High School Discovering Democracy AP government class will be briefed by a U.S. Supreme Court justice during its week of field study and research in Washington.

Twenty-four Milton High School students left Tuesday and were scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C., today for the second annual Discovering Democracy field study. They'll be studying and living in the nation's capital through Sunday.

The Discovering Democracy scholars will have an audience with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The students will be involved in question and answer sessions with Rep. Paul Ryan and Rep. Tammy Baldwin, Sen. Ron Johnson, Sen. Herb Kohl's legislative director Chad Metzler, Justice Ginsburg, lobbyists, and other key figures within their topic areas.

The Milton students have finalizing preparations for two interviews, which they will conduct while in Washington with experts in their respective policy areas. The group will also experience tours of the Library of Congress, the Capitol Building and the White House. The group will also visit the National Archives; Ford's Theater; the Smithsonian Museum; the Antietam Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Md.; Arlington Cemetery; and Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington.

Discovering Democracy also will enjoy the theater culture of Washington, attending a performance of "Liberty Smith" at Ford's Theater and "The Capitol Steps" at the Ronald Reagan Building. Students also will attend services at the National Cathedral on Sunday.

Discovering Democracy will return to Milton on Monday.
