Janesville Craig’s boys tennis team got the Big Eight Conference season off to a successful start Tuesday.

The Cougars, thanks to a crucial three-set victory from No. 1 singles player Joel Neher, held off host Sun Prairie, 4-3.

Craig High also got wins from Derek Masters at No. 2 singles, along with the No. 1 doubles team of Cody Lipetri and Zack Hardin, and the No. 2 team of Ross Sroda and Katsumi Neeno.

“We’ve still got a long way to go before we get to where I expect this team to be, but I’m real pleased with what we got out of the kids today,” Craig High coach Justin Long said. “Our one and two doubles teams really stepped up , while Joel’s three-set win proved to be the difference.”

The Cougars will host a triangular on Friday. The triangular, which will be held at Janesville Parker, will feature Craig High, Milton and Sauk Prairie.

Matt Knutson, Ryan Ploof and Ethan Zweifel won at 1, 2 and 4 singles for Parker, but Beloit swept all three doubles matches.

I liked what I saw at times, but other times, we looked like we were only in our second week of the season,” Parker coach Mike Fuhrmann said. “We’re getting better, but we just didn’t make enough shots tonight.
