— Janesville Craig High School defeated host Madison Memorial, 5-1, Monday in softball to break into the win column for the first time this season.

The Cougars improved to 1-2 in the Big Eight and 1-4 overall.

Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said it was a relief for the Cougars earn their first win.

“The pitching was better, we swung the bats a lot better and we ran the bases well,” Bayreuther said. “When you put those things together, it’s amazing what happens.’’

The Cougars collected 11 hits, including Stephanie Kalish’s two-run double in the third inning that put Craig ahead, 4-0. Haley Bayreuther went 3 for 4 to lead the Cougars’ attack.

On the mound, Craig’s Paige Weber allowed four hits and notched six strikeouts for the victory.

“She was right on her spots, and she stayed ahead of the hitters,” Bayreuther said.

Craig travels to Middleton for a 4 p.m. game Wednesday.
