Pointers rebound, sweep Warhawks

— UW-Stevens Point took its revenge on visiting UW-Whitewater and swept a WIAC baseball doubleheader Sunday.

The Warhawks dropped the Pointers, 5-3 and 6-2 on Saturday, but Stevens Point roared back with 8-1 and 11-7 victories to split the four-game set. Sunday’s games were the final regular-season meetings between the WIAC favorites.

Whitewater has won nine of the last 11 regular-season championships. Stevens Point has won seven of the last 11 conference tournaments. In the last 11 years, each school has earned seven NCAA Division III tournament berths.

In the opener, Point’s Cody Koback and Ryan Iverson combined to hold the Warhawks to three hits. Koback (2-1) went the first six innings for the victory.

Justin Jerschele ripped a two-run single in the fifth inning to give Point the lead for good at 2-0. Whitewater bounced back with its lone run in the sixth on a Jeff Donovan double and Dylan Friend’s sacrifice fly.

Stevens Point ripped Whitewater pitching for 15 hits. Justin Lambert (2-1) took the loss.

In Game 2, Point scored one run in the third to take the lead for good, 5-4. Bryan Clark ripped a three-run homer in the fifth to put Point ahead 8-4.

Kyle Lee (2-1), the first of three Warhawk pitchers, took the loss. He allowed four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Overall, Whitewater pitching

allowed 26 hits.
