McLinn leaving Milton City Council

MILTON — On the heels of Tuesday's election, another seat on Milton City Council is about to open up.

Alderman Robert McLinn said Wednesday he planned to announce his resignation from the council.

McLinn, 43, a field support manager with JCPenney, said his job had been eliminated recently, but he has accepted a new position with JCPenney in Omaha, Neb.

McLinn was elected to the council in April 2010. His resignation comes after serving just one year.

McLinn on Wednesday confirmed his decision to resign but declined further comment, saying that he planned to give a full statement at a city council meeting Wednesday night.

In the past, Milton City Council members have approved appointments for vacant seats on the council.

Although it was unclear Wednesday who would be considered to fill McLinn's vacancy, incumbent council members Maxine Striegl and Dave Schumacher both lost bids for re-election Tuesday.

McLinn in 2010 ran a successful campaign for the council on a platform of common sense business practices. He's been a supporter of facility improvements in Milton, including the city's plans to build a new Department of Public works facility.

Early in his tenure, McLinn supported business district improvements and said he wanted to see Milton become a regional showplace despite the pending bypass of the city's main thoroughfare, Highway 26.

"We really need to look at those big communities up near Madison and show them that the little towns like Milton are here. We're on the map," McLinn told the Gazette last year.
