— Incumbent Barbara Jacobson faces a 15-year Evansville City Council veteran in Tuesday's election for the District 1 seat.

Tom Cothard, 217 N. Sixth St., served on the council and numerous committees before resigning a year ago when he moved from his home in District 2.

The District 1 race between Cothard and Jacobson, 55 S. Sixth St., is the only contested city race for a two-year term on the council.

The Gazette spoke with Cothard but was unable to reach Jacobson.

Cothard said he's missed serving on the council in the last year and said he can bring a lot back to the council.

"(I had) been in it so long that I knew where all the bodies were buried," he joked.

Cothard said the experience he brings includes being a part of hiring everyone in city hall, including three different city administrators and other department heads over the years.

He's kept in touch with city officials and stayed current on city issues, he said.

As for keeping a balanced budget, Cothard said, "It's going to be tightening the belt, holding down taxes, holding down wages. People don't like to hear that, (but) it's got to be done."
