— How good is Janesville Craig’s baseball team going to be this season?

If Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Oconomowoc is any indication, the answer is very good.

The Cougars erupted for 23 runs, winning game one, 12-0 in five innings, and game two, 11-5.

Cody Steed threw a one-hitter and struck out nine in game one, while Jameson Henning hit two home runs in the second game as the Cougars opened up the season in impressive fashion.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the way we played today,” Craig High coach Vic Herbst said. “We got contributions from everybody up and down the lineup.

“Our pitching was good, defensively we were solid in both games, and we swung the bats very well.”

Steed, a senior righthander. was overpowering in game one. He did not allow a runner past second base in picking up where he left off in an All-Big Eight Conference season a year ago.

The Cougars scored six runs in the top of the first in game one, capped off by Riley Quinn’s two-run single.

Henning was the story in the second game. The Western Illinois University recruit went 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and three RBI.

“Jameson put on a show in game two,” Herbst said. “He hit the third pitch of the game for a home run, and his second one in the fourth was a no-doubt-about-it shot. He’s a very skilled player.

“And everybody else in the lineup swung the bat well, too. It was a great way to start the season all the way around.”

Craig High opens the Big Eight season Tuesday at Verona.
