— The focus is on the present and not the past for Janesville Parker’s girls soccer team.

The Vikings, who open the season today at home against Racine Case in a nonconference game, struggled to a two-win season a year ago.

“I can see already that our fitness and conditioning is a lot better this year than it was last year at this time,” Parker coach Amy Wargowsky said. “The goal, as it is every season, is to continue to improve each and every day.

“We’ve got nine seniors on this year’s team, and I know the girls are excited about getting the season started.”

Wargowsky has confidence in goalkeeper Brianna Washington. The junior took over the starting duties halfway through the season last year and performed admirably.

Seniors Sam Witek and Brianna Michios return as forwards, while senior Katie Godding will be a midfielder.

“As seniors, those three know what I expect, and what it’s like to play varsity soccer in the Big Eight. I think they’re ready for the challenge,” Wargowsky said.

Senior Rachel O’Leary will move to sweeper this season, while junior Courtney Schumacher will anchor the defense. Savannah Shepler, a three-year starter for the program, tore her ACL during the basketball season and will not be able to play this spring.

“I’ve got some depth on defense, and after we play a few games, I hope a couple of girls step up and assert themselves,” said Wargowsky, who is beginning her third year as head coach. “It comes down to playing with confidence and being sure of yourself when you’re on the field.”

The Vikings normally play home games at night, but lightning knocked out a transformer on one of the light standards. Today’s home opener will be played at 4:30, but Wargowsky is hopeful that the problem can be fixed before Tuesday’s home game against Oregon.
