Sun Prairie High School defeated visiting Middleton, 17-7, Friday night to take sole possession of first place in the Big Eight Conference football race.


The victory lifted Sun Prairie to 5-0 and clinched a WIAA playoff berth, while Middleton fell to 4-1 and into a second-place tie with Verona.


Middleton was held scoreless after a 34-yard touchdown pass from Scott Carey to Ian Joyce in the first quarter.


Sun Prairie’s Tyler Patterson scored on a one-yard plunge and Jordan Noble added the extra-point kick to it, 7-7, at the break. Mike Mwelwa scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter to give Sun Prairie the lead for good, 14-7.


Noble booted a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter for the final margin.


Mwelwa gained 125 yards on 20 carries, while Middleton’s Jamie Hofer gained 127 yards on 25 carries for Middleton.
